PLEASE NOTE

Someone pointed out to me that while first reading through this, it kind of sounds like a lot of this information is coming straight from me. While quite a bit of the general info IS from me, most of the quotes are not. At the end of any part of text that you find a set of ('s with a little symbol in them, that information has come from another source, with the source list at the end of this FAQ .. so before you start reading and think me and Tori are best buds hanging out all the time, it's (unfortunatly) not so. :)

( Q ) What is Tori Amos's real name?
( A ) Myra Ellen Amos

( Q ) Where did she get the name 'Tori' from?
( A ) There have been several stories and much speculation about the name change. They go as follows :

  • Named herself after the Torrey pine -- a small, crooked, and rare tree which grows in Southern California
  • Derived her name from the word 'noTORIous,' for always wearing red leather pants when teaching Sunday School for her father's church [a]
  • One of her friend's boyfriends, after hearing her play in a club, said to her "You don't look like an 'Ellen,' you look more like a Tori."(@) [b]
The truth is actually a combination of them. The last comment (her friends boyfriend) did actually take place. Tori then found out about the Torrey Pine, and decided to keep the name. [1]

( Q ) Where is Tori from?
( A ) Tori was born in Newton, North Carolina (near Hickory). She now lives in London, England, but has a house in New Mexico.

( Q ) When was Tori born?
( A ) August 22, 1963

( Q ) Is Tori's hair really that red?
( A ) Nope. Pictures of a younger Tori reveal she's actually a brunette. In a recent on-line interview on Prodigy(tm), Tori revealed the number and brand of hair dye she uses.

( Q ) I've heard Tori is a lesbian. Is this true?
( A ) Nope. Tori is very much heterosexual. However, she has stated that meeting k.d. lang made her stop and think about it for a minute.

( Q ) Where did Tori go to high school?
( A ) Ellen Amos graduated in 1981 from :

    		Richard Montgomery High School
   		250 Richard Montgomery Drive
    		Rockville, Maryland 20852
    		(301)-279-8400

She is spoken of at times. During an English assignment to recite poetry, one kid recited the lyrics to "Silent All These Years" and mentioned that she was a 1981 RM graduate. A foreign language teacher once reminisced in class that she used to annoy everyone by singing all the time.

Her senior year, she was voted:[q]

		 Homecoming Queen
       		 Most Likely to Succeed (female)
        	 Most Talented (female)
       		 Best All-Around (female)

IV. GENERAL QUESTIONS

( Q ) What does the word 'Toriphile' mean?
( A ) The suffix -phile roughly means love, so you attach it to the end of the word to mean a person who loves that certain thing. So, in this case, a Toriphile basically means an avid Tori fan.

( Q ) What is the Tori 'food list'?
( A ) The Tori food list, by whatever name it can be found, is a list of foods that Tori has mentioned in some way, in an interview, in a song, etc.

Most Toriphiles use the Tori food list as a menu of what to eat at any ToriFESTs that are held - kind of like a list of kosher food to eat at the special occation. ;)

( Q ) What is "OkTorifest"?
( A ) In August of last year several people here hosted Torifest parties. We waited until October to have ours, because we were still recovering from our Kate Bush party, and it was too soon for us to have another one. A friend of ours from Texas suggested the name OkTorifest, and that's what we called our party, which we held on October 9th. It seems that Tori thought all of the parties were held in October. I don't know how she knew that we called ours OkTorifest though. I guess her manager probably told her.

We'll be hosting OkTorifest again this year, but we'll have to wait until we know more about the tour schedule to plan it. The ideal situation would be to have the party and then go see Tori perform. Last tour she was in the Midwest in October, so maybe it will work out that way this time. (*)

( Q ) What is the Really Deep Thoughts fanzine?
( A ) There is now a Tori Amos fanzine, also called Really Deep Thoughts. It is produced by Melissa and Richard Caldwell, and it has the support of Tori and her management. It is a very nice and well-created fanzine, and subscriptions are $15 per annum ($20 overseas) for four (4) issues.

For details, contact Melissa or Richard at :

( A ) The InterNet mail list is titled Really Deep Thoughts, or RDT for short. If you would like to subscribe, or want more information, send mail to : rdt-request@gradient.cis.upenn.edu

DO NOT SEND SUBSCRIPTION REQUESTS TO THE LIST

( Q ) Where can I get Tori-related stuff, besides the InterNet?
( A ) The only BBS I am aware of that has Tori-dedicated text and file sections is Shidoshi's board (Miranda's Cafe). If there are other boards out there, LET US KNOW!

    		Miranda's Cafe ......... 300-2400 ......... 8/n/1 .......
			+1 402 457 6984

Tori .gifs, Mac .picts, interviews, misc. text, & special Mac stuff

(MC is an invite-only BBS. HOWEVER - if you let me know in mail that you are calling for Tori stuff, I will be happy to give you access to it).

( Q ) What about World Wide Web sites?
( A ) There are a bunch of WWW homepages and sites which contain Tori info! Here's a list of several of them: [d]

Most of these sites will have links to some of the other sites.

( Q ) I see I can get a list of tour dates from one of the Web sites above, but what if I don't have access to the WWW?
( A ) You can also obtain a list of tour dates from: tour@bsbbs.columbus.oh.us [n]

( Q ) How can I contact Tori Amos?
( A ) You can write to Tori care of here management, Spivak Entertainment. The address is :

       		Los Angeles, CA 90064

Tori has said that she gets far too much mail to be able to reply to it individually, but that she does read everything she gets. So don't be upset if you don't get a reply.

( Q ) What was it Tori did for the Death : High Cost of Living series?
( A ) Tori wrote the introduction on the Death : HCoL compilation.

( Q ) Were Tori lyrics in an issue of Sandman?
( A ) Yes. In Issue #41, "Tear in Your Hand" is being played in the background of the leather bar Delirium walks in to. Also, Tori references in "Sandman" --the most recent is in this month's issue--#66. Rose Walker is talking to someone, and she says, "No, I'm more of a *cornflakes girl* myself" (emphasis mine). She doesn't specifically say the exact title of the song, sure--it's plural. And she wasn't talking about music, I don't think. But I think it was a Neil-winking-at-Tori kinda thing.[r]

( Q ) Don't Delerium, from _Sandman_, and Tori, look a bit alike?
( A ) More than a bit. Many people have noticed that the red-haired Tori and the red-haired Delerium have been looking more and more alike since Sandman Issue #41. Neil, thought, denies this is intention ... but do we believe him? ;)

( Q ) Have Beavis & Butt-head ever watched a Tori video?
( A ) Yup. They watched "Crucify" in one of the newer ones. Here's how it went.

tori walking into the room, beavis and butthead laugh
Tori : I'd like to spit in their faces...
Butthead : She's going to spit on someone?
Beavis : Yeah, yeah! Go for it!
Butthead : That would be pretty cool.
Tori : I've got a bowling ball in my stomach...
Butthead : Is that Dave Mustain?
Beavis : Yeah, yeah. [In a whiney/scratchy/spoken voice] "I've got a bowling ball in my stomach. I've got a desert in my mouth."
Butthead : That was pretty cool, Beavis.
    Beavis : Yeah, thanks.
    Tori in the bathtub.
Butthead : How many videos are they going to make with chicks in a bathtub?
Beavis : Yeah.. At least if they showed them naked it would be cool.
Butthead : Yeah. How come they never show chicks in showers?
Beavis : Yeah. huh, yeah. Like in soap commercials. Did you ever see that soap commercial, where that chick gets stabbed? WHEEN, WHEEN, WHEEN, WHEEN..
Butthead : No, buttmunch, that's that movie about those guys in the woods.
Beavis : They're not in the woods, they're in the shower. WHEEN, WHEEN, WHEEN..
Tori doing that little cheerleader routine.
Butthead : Is this, like, a commercial for VH1?
Beavis : Yeah. "The difference between you and your parents."
    Butthead : Yeah. That's stupid.
Beavis : What's that red thing?
    Butthead : I think it's toilet paper.
Beavis : Yeah. Toilet paper. (=)
They've also watched the 'God' video in the episode "Walkathon".

( Q ) What about all those songs she created for Eric?
( A ) Tori has decided to scrap or rewrite most of her all of her work pertaining to Eric. Apparently, they had quite a falling out, and consequently, we may never see such songs as Song for Eric again

( Q ) Which album is better, LE or UtP?
( A ) Oooh, not a good question to ask. *grin* I think, from what I've seen, more Toriphiles have decided that both albums are different enough to not try to compare them, but see them as two equally good albums.

( Q ) So when's the next album coming out?
( A ) The original plan was to settle down and have a baby, but since her break up with Eric, these plans have changed. Tori's going to try and have a new album out sometime in 1996. In the meantime, she's working on new projects and does actually have new stuff coming out.

( Q ) So what are these new projects and new Tori?
( A ) Tori's working on the score of Neil Gaiman's _Sandman_ series which will be going on Audio Book (can someone please verify this...), and has new stuff out:

Duet w/Tom Jones "I Wanna Get Back with You" [h]
Duet w/Michael Stipe to come out on the _Don Juan de Marco
and the Centerfold_ (however, this project
has been indefinately shelved. It might come
		out on another album [2]).
"Butterfly" and "Losing My Religion" out on the soundtrack
to John Singelton's movie _Higher Learning_
"Famous Blue Raincoat" on the Leonard Cohen tribute album
"Down By The Seaside", a duet w/Robert Plant out on the
	  	Led Zepplin tribute album

( Q ) Tori has said that the song "Sugar" has gotten her into loads of trouble. What does she mean by this?
( A ) We're not really sure, since she pretty much refuses to go into it. One source says that on a KROQ interview, Tori said the song was inspired by Freddy Mercury of Queen. [f] At her Los Angeles concert 23 August 1994, she said she was on a train to a meeting with one of the record big wigs (I think she said her producer, but I'm not 100% certain on this...), and had 6 hours to write a song. She was sitting there with her trolls, and her egg salad sandwich, trying to think of what to write, thinking that she couldn't write another 5-minute pool (I'm not sure if she said this exactly...if someone could clarify, I'd be greatly appreciative). She couldn't come up with anything, so when she gets where she's going, she goes into the guys office, and he asks her if she wants some tea. Tori says yes, and then the guy asks her if she wants some sugar in her tea.

This made Tori really mad, since the guy had been making her tea for the last 6 months and couldn't remember whether or not she took sugar in her tea or not. [g]

I'm not sure if this is the real story behind 'Sugar,' but upon reading the lyrics, I can see how it's possible ;-)

( Q ) Where can I get a copy of the Limited Edition Cornflake Girl, Silent All These Years, and/or Crucify CD?
( A ) Unfortunately, these were, as it is said, Limited edition. All of these singles are commanding values from $30-$70. I wish I had a copy of one myself. :-(

( Q ) What about the "Winter" CD single that's a limited edition? It says limited edition, but I see it all over the place...is it worth anything?
( A ) Yes and no. It depends on _which_ version you have. There are in actuality, *3* versions of the "Winter" CD which were released. The only one which is the true limited edition is the UK release which has a black and white cover showing Tori on the horse (similar to the "Winter" black and white poster they sell at her concert), and has the songs from the US Crucify CD.

I think the reason the US version says 'limited edition' is because according to the LE and UtP songbooks, it was released in November as a special Christmas release. Other than that, I've no clue. All I know is that the CD is in a massive abundance, and doesn't seem to be too limited... :-}

( Q ) What Tori Amos bootlegs are out there and how can I get one. Heck, what's a bootleg for that matter?
( A ) A bootleg is a live concert recording of a music artist. These are almost *always* illegal, but many tricks are pulled so that way they can be bought and sold in the US. Bootlegs are recorded via audience members, soundboard hook up, or FM broadcast, as well as other ways. If you are interested in a list of these you can get in touch with fuzzbox@world.std.com to get a copy.

( Q ) What Tori Amos albums/singles are out there?
( A ) There is a list of tori albums located at the ftp site ftp.uwp.edu. Although it is *very* outdated. Perhaps someone out there can update the sucker for us?

This is how you access it:

At your home prompt type: ftp ftp.uwp.edu
        login name: anonymous
        password:
	type:
        	bin
		cd pub/music/artists/a/amos.tori
        	get discog
        	bye

This will get you a copy of your very own tori discography.

( Q ) What is R.A.I.N.N?
( A ) R.A.I.N.N. is the Rape, Abuse, and Incest National Network, of which Tori is a founding member. (more info here, please)

( Q ) Is there an "Ode to the Banana King - Part 2"?
( A ) (From an interview posted to RDT, by Anthony Horan):

Tori Amos : "Pretty Good Year" is really part two of "Ode to the Banana King." "Ode to the Banana King" is part one - as you see, Lucy reoccurs. That's part two, "Pretty Good Year." So I'll probably write part three. [h]

( Q ) How many videos does Tori have, and what songs are they for?
( A ) So far, Tori has videos for "Crucify," "Winter", "Silent all these Years", "China", and "God", "Pretty Good Year", 2 videos for "Cornflake Girl", and "Past the Mission".

( Q ) What is _Pink Earthquakes?_
( A ) Pink Earthquakes is a box set containing a 48-page color book (about the size of a vinyl record) with a discography, and many pictures of Tori, 4 color postcards, a certificate of authenticity (#/2000), and *usually* either LE or UtP (the record store decides), although some have been sold without a CD. This set is not authorized by Tori, and usually goes for $55-$70.

V. TORI'S WHO'S WHO

( Q ) Who is this Kate Bush person people keep comparing Tori to?
( A ) Another question that can stir up some deep emotion. Kate Bush is a female musician who doesn't fit the norm, and has been creating new and different music for quite some time. When LE was released, a great deal of reviewers compared Tori to Kate, as both are female, both make different-sounding music, etc. With the release of UtP, people still feel the need to compare Tori to Kate, and that doesn't sit good with quite a few Toriphiles. General feeling is, why is there a need to compare Tori to someone else? Why can't she be looked at as an individual.

If you ask who Kate is on RDT InterNet, you're likely to get a, "Kate who?" ;)

( Q ) Who is Eric Rosse?
( A ) Eric Rosse USE to be Tori's SO (Significant Other), and helped her to produce her work. Supposedly, they "seperated as friends." Exactly why they seperated I'm not sure. (#)(")

( Q ) So who is Tori dating now?
( A ) There have been rumors as to who Tori is dating now, including the lead singer of R.E.M., Michael Stipe (who's shown up at a few Tori concerts of late), Andrew Eldritch (lead singer for 'Sisters of Mercy' [o], Mark Pickering {from 'Other Voices') [p], and a guy from England (who's nobody famous...)

( Q ) Who is Neil?
( A ) Neil is Neil Gaiman of Sandman fame. He is the author of the very popular DC graphic novel series. Rantz, a friend of Tori's from LA, was visiting her one time, and introduced her to Sandman, which she took to.

When writing "Tear in Your Hand," she included a reference to him. She was worried Neil might not like the idea, so Rantz passed along a demo of LE to Neil while at a comic convention. Both Neil and Tori live in England, so when he got back he contacted her, and the two have become good friends. (@)

Neil has also worked with English author, Terry Pratchett, on his novel _Good Omens_.

There have been three main mentiones of Neil or his work:

    	"Tear in your Hand"
...me and Neil'll be hanging out with the DREAM
KING Neil says hi by the way...

    	"Space Dog"
...so where's Neil when you need him...

    	Credits on UtP
		...Hi Neil...

( Q ) Who is Cindy Palmano?
( A ) Cindy was the main Art Director and Photographer for LE and UtP, the various singles, and directed the videos "Silent all these Years," "Winter," "China," and "Pretty Good Year."

( Q ) Who is Greg? [ "Greg he writes letters and burns his CDs...", PGY ]
( A ) TORI: Like "Pretty Good Year," for example, I got a letter from a guy named Greg in England. This one got to me -- it missed getting to me for, like, three months. But it just got passed around to different people, and finally somebody just -- I was walking through the record label in between the tour up in England, and somebody put it in my bag. They just said, "You know what, Tori? This has been sitting around here. Just take it."

And I took this letter, and I opened my bag two days later, and I read it. It was a picture of him he had drawn himself. It was a pencil drawing. Greg has kind of scrawny hair and glasses, and he's very skinny and he held this great big flower. Greg is 23, lives in the north of England, and his life is over, in his mind.

...

The tragedy of that for me, just seeing that over and over again, got to me so much that I wrote "Pretty Good Year". You don't really know what my role is. Am I Lucy, or am I that eight bars of grunge that comes out near the end where I express, and then nothing, everything else is Greg's story? I found that kind of really fun. The emotion is coming from somebody else's story. And yet it touched me so much that I could sing it. (&)

( Q ) Who is scrumpy?
( A ) Scrumpy is the dog that Tori rescued while she was recording UtP in new Mexico. The dog lived a few months, and then died from injuries received earlier.

( Q ) Okay, if the dog is Scrumpy, who's Stimpy?
( A ) Stimpy is Tori's nickname for Trent Reznor [q]

VI. Y KAN'T TORI READ QUESTIONS

( Q ) What is Y Kant Tori Read?
( A ) Before making Little Earthquakes, Tori was in an LA-based rock band called Y Kant Tori Read. They produced a self-titled album in 1988 which was a critical and commercial failure. Opinions on this album are divided: some of people consider it to be just a mediocre radio-orientated rock album, while others think that there is still some very good music there, though it is partly obscured by the heavy rock production. Tori herself dislikes this album, partly because it holds bad memories for her, and has described it as like "Madonna and Kate Bush in a head-on collision after eating bad mushrooms". Billboard basically demeaned Tori's whole personality when this album came out. Copies of it are extremely rare, since it only sold 7000 copies when it was released [i], and uaually go in value from about $100-$300. However, there are 5 known bootlegs of this album out there, and possibly more.

( Q ) How Can I tell if my copy of YKTR is a bootleg or not?
( A ) There is only one legitimate release of YKTR on CD available. It has not been reissued by Atlantic in any way shape or form. Legitimate CDs will have clean, sharp artwork in the booklet and on the back cover. In addition, the legitimate CD will have "Y Kant Tori Read" in RED letters on a WHITE background on the spine. Also, the catalog number, printed on the spine, and the back of the legitimate CD is 81845-2, not 81845-1, which is the actual catalog number for the vinyl version.

  1. YKTR only- recorded on a Gold Recordable CD. I don't know much about this one, as I don't have one, and am slowly giving up on getting one. If you happen to find one, or want to sell me yours, please let me know...
  2. YKTR only- a German bootleg of the CD. it is easily distinguishable by the spine which is WHITE on BLACK lettering. it also carries the incorrect catalog number 81845-1. In addition, the artwork suffers from quite a bit of crosshatching when it was scanned, the colors just don't look "right" (Tori's hair color on the cover is WAAAAAAY off), and it is obvious that some scan retouching has been done on the cover where the promo sticker used to be. (directly to the right of Tori's face.)

(Yes, I know this one says "Atlantic Records" all over it. IT IS NOT LEGITIMATE!!! The bootlegger just wanted to try extra hard to make it seem real, and to make his tracks unfollowable. IMHO, whoever it was did a pretty good job..)

  3. YKTR plus rarities- Another Bootleg that I don't have, but have seen. The bonus tracks are a dead giveaway that this one is bogus, as is the Cd booklet that is a tiny bit too big to fit in the jewel box.
  4. YKTR plus rarities, mark 2- Apparently identical to #3, with the "Red Robin" logo added to the back.
  5. Ultra rare Tori- Very obviously a bootleg. Awful sound quality, plus extra tracks, also of poor quality. Doesn't even pretend to be a legit YKTR.[j]

( Q ) How can I get Y Kant Tori Read?
( A ) Interest in this album has been revitalized since _Little Earthquakes_. Since it's been deleted for some time now, and very unlikely to be re-released, it is now very difficult to come by.

You can, always, ask someone who has a copy of YKTR to make you a copy. We all know dubbing is a no-no, but would Tori REALLY care if there are YKTR dubs out there? ;)

You can also obtain a bootleg copy from Intergalactic Garage (IGG) It's 'bootleg #3.' However, IGG tends to be *VERY* slow from time to time, so you can never really tell [3]

( Q ) So has anyone else from YKTR made it big, like Tori?
( A ) Yes. The drummer for YKTR was Matt Sorum, who is the current drummer for the rock group "Guns 'n' Roses," and Vinnie Coliauta also played drums for YKTR (in 'Etienne'), and currently plays as part of Sting's band.[k] Also, Steve Farris played guitar for YKTR and later went on to play for the group "Mr. Mister." VII. LITTLE EARTHQUAKES QUESTIONS

( Q ) What is the 'hidden' thing at the end of "Happy Phantom"?
( A ) If you listen closely enough, near the very end of HP, you can hear Tori say "oops." Since the vocal and musical parts are recorded differently (a mike for her, a mike for her piano ... you get the idea), it has been said that this part was just accidently forgotten about, and didn't get cut before the final version. On a CD player, it should show up around 3:10.

( Q ) What is this about a different back for _Little Earthquakes_?
( A ) It seems the original back cover for LE was changed for some reason. It was a painting done by Dave McKean, an artist who works with Neil. The exact reason it was replaced by the mushrooms, or what the original painting was of are a mystery to me (anyone help?). (@)

( Q ) Was Tori raped? I hear this is where 'Me and a Gun' came from.
( A ) Yes and no. Tori was ALMOST raped - but the actual event did not take place. She kept it bottled up for quite some time, then one day she saw _Thelma & Louise_. She found the courage to express her hidden feelings after seeing this movie, and this not only was the beginning of MAAG, but LE itself.

( Q ) What is with the capitalized words in the LE lyrics booklet?
( A ) RDT : What about the capital letters?

Cindy: Oh, I just picked out the ones I thought would look good in capital letters. (laughs) In fact, we did it over the telephone. I asked Tori to sing it so that it if somebody was trying to follow it, it would help them relate. Then I'm afraid I moved it around a bit, according to where it came typographically. Where there was an emphasis on the word, or a word that you really heard... it really does work. (@)

VIII. UNDER THE PINK QUESTIONS

( Q ) What does Under the Pink mean, anyhow?
( A ) 'Under the Pink' refers to the dealing with topics and subjects about women. Pink is a color usually associated with the female sex, so it basically means 'under the catagory of females.' The title also has to do with skin color, and the whole reference to being under out skin :

"...And when you take something from someone's uppermost skin, we are all pink. It's all about that part of us inside, where we live on our intuition. The colour pink also stands for: girl accepts the woman in herself." (^)

( Q ) What is a 'Nishiki'?
( A ) A type of bicycle.

( Q ) What is a 'Borneo'?
( A ) Tori : "What does Borneo make you feel?"
Rick [interviewer]: "Stormy, I think.."
Tori : "Hot and wet. Something I'd like to be sometime. *laugh*"

Apparently it *is* about Borneo the geographical location. (%)

( Q ) What is that at the end of "Yes, Anastasia?"
( A ) " The knock on wood is the sound of the dampers in the piano returning to their resting places on the strings when Tori releases the sustaining pedal i.e. the one that's sometimes incorrectly called the loud pedal.

I guess the sigh is one of contentment (perhaps it was the 23rd take - - no, there can't have been that many)." (!)

( Q ) What is the story of Tori supposedly seeing a ghost?
( A ) Time Out ran a few lines in its diary last week, asking "Is Tori Amos a couple of keys short of a full piano?" This was prompted by Amos telling a journalist that she had been visited by the ghostly presence of Anastasia Romanov, who wanted her story told in a song. Amos recounted the same incident to me. It had happened in October 1992, she said, just before a concert in Richmond, Virginia. She had food poisoning at the time.

"I was feeling so sick that I wanted to be put out of my misery. And then I get this presence. It's like a light, a blueish-greyish light . . . The message was, `You need to learn something out of writing my story'."
Czar Nicholas II and his family are said to have been executed in July of 1918, but a young woman showed up in 1920 claiming to be Anastasia. She said that a Polish soldier had helped her escape the massacre. There's still controversy over whether or not that woman was the actual daughter of the czar. ($)

( Q ) What is Tori saying in "God" around 2:25 which is hard to make out?
( A ) Okay, I tracked down the Biblical quote in "God" at 2:25-2:32. It's Proverbs 31:3:

Give not thy strength unto women, nor thy ways to that which destroyeth kings.'
She reads it in a monotone which makes it hard to follow, but reading along with the verse it's very clear that it matches. (+)

( Q ) What are the little similarities between LE and UtP I keep hearing about?
( A ) There are a lot of little insignificant parallels like that between the sequencing of LE and UtP. For example:

Track Two : One word titles beginning with G
Track Four : Songs beginning with the letter P
Track Four : Trent Reznor/Nine Inch Nails tie-in
Track Ten : (object) (in/on) (your/my) (body part of choice)
Track Twelve : Longest track on the album

( Q ) I read in the liner notes in Under the Pink that Trent Reznor sang backup on Past The Mission. Is this the same Trent Reznor who heads Nine Inch Nails?
( A ) Yep, they are one and the same. As a matter of fact, Tori had to go happened to also be the place where the Manson cult murders took place) and cook him a chicken dinner just to talk him into it.

( Q ) What did they do to the piano used in Bells for Her?
( A ) I don't have the details on this quite right; soon, I'll try to transcribe Tori's comments about this from an interview in Atlanta... but ....
Eric Rosse and some other guy (Phil Shenale) took an ordinary piano and detuned it down an octave, and modified it by adding things like paper or wires to the strings. But it's definitely just a heavily modified piano; it's *not* a glockenschpiel or a harpsichord or anything whacked like that....

Also, reported on rdt by woj@romulus.rutgers.edu:

meredith had a chance to talk to tori's piano technician before the show in preparation for an article in an upcoming issue of rdt-the-zine. he talked about what he did to make the "bells for her" piano sound like it does. although the piano that is being used on the tour is not the same one that was used to make the recording, he said that, acoustically, it is identical to the original though the acoustics and soundmen at each venue may may it not sound like the original. for instance, at the uconn show, it sounded more like a muted koto than anything else.[m]

On the convex-ish side, it says, (the words straddling the bend) but i believe in peace bitch, and on the concave-ish side, it says "Tori Amos" in that funky grass writing that's on the back of the US version of the Winter ltd. (Someone got it for me, the pendant I mean) (`)

  • Tori Amos picture collague t-shirt (?)

    From Phil Homewood:

There were _three_ UtP tour tees on sale at her Brisbane, AU concert. I got a black one, with the (honey?) and the words 'listen to me' on the front; tour venues in one big spiral on the back, around a piccy of Tori in a wooden box (off CfG US single). I also got (for my brother) a white tee, which might be described as a collage tee - a dozen or so artworks from singles, and albums, plus letters 'TORI AMOS' spelled in hair, on front; back cover of LE, plus two artworks from UtP on back. There was a third shirt for sale too - all I remember is that it had the lyrics to all of UtP on the back. [3]

  • "Tea with the Waitress" - Interview CD

Interview CD with Bob Waugh from WHFS-FM, Washington D.C. - Question and Answer session with integrated music (Tori's, of course *grin*)
